“It’s Super Miami: a Florida Dialect is Getting Recognition,” Washington Post, Nov. 29, 2023   New arrivals in Miami, along with their children, have learned English using direct translations of Spanish phrases. That’s created a local dialect now getting academic recognition as “Miami English.” Some examples, according to Post reporter Raquel Coronell Uribe: “In Miami, people don’t ‘get’ in line, they ‘make’ the line (from the Spanish ‘hacer la fila’). They are not ‘very’ tired, they are ‘super tired’ (“Estar súper cansado”). They don’t ‘get out’ of their cars, they ‘get down’ from their cars (‘Bajarse del carro’).” Miami, a hub of Latin American commerce, is heavily populated by Spanish speakers. Florida International University Professor Phillip M. Carter says “Miami is probably the most diverse Spanish-speaking city, maybe in the world, just based on the number of different types of Spanish language varieties or dialects that are used here.” Miami English draws on these differen...
