A new one that opened over the weekend in a rec center quickly saw its 400 beds filled. Hundreds of hotel rooms lined up by the city for migrants are now occupied. Another shelter is in the works at vacant middle school. In the West Texas border town of El Paso, the strains faced by the government of a city with a tradition of welcoming migrants have Mayor Oscar Leeser applauding the chartering of buses by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott to take hundreds of migrants to cities like Denver, Chicago or New York. El Paso is just one of many cities showing such strains. An influx of arrivals from Venezuela, but also other countries in South America and Africa “is taxing the available services in cities and small towns from Texas to California,” the Times reports.
